It used to be that Camillus was part of what was known as the Central New York Military Tract. In about 1795, the first pioneer by the name of Joseph Sherwood arrived where the village of Camillus is located. The town was formed here in 1799 with the land that came from the town of Marcellus. In 1825, a significant amount of industrial development got a boost from the Erie Canal. The town of Camillus was also located along the railroad line that linked both Auburn and Syracuse in 1838. Eventually. Both the Wilcox Octagon House and the Nine Mile Creek Aqueduct got listed within the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1795, the first frame house was erected by Isaac Lindsay. By the year 1808, the entire village of Camillus only included two frame houses. David Munro constructed the first substantial frame house in 1810. Around the same time, Captain Kimberly and the White family put up houses in Amboy.

In addition to constructing the first frame house in the town, Isaac Lindsay also kept the first tavern here in 1793. John Tomlinson opened the very first store in the town in 1808. James R. Lawrence opened the first law office in 1815, and the first doctor established his practice in Camillus in 1808. This physician’s name was Dr. Isaac Magoon.
